BigBelly System: Solar-Powered Trash Compaction
The solar-powered, cordless design of the BigBelly Solar Trash Compaction System allows the units to be deployed virtually anywhere, eliminating the costly trenching and wiring required for conventional plug-in compaction technology. This self-powered capability provides clients with great flexibility to locate units where trash collection is a challenge, thus dramatically improving service levels, reducing or eliminating unsightly overflowing trash bins, and reducing collection trips.
The latest version of BigBelly keeps all of the operational features of the traditional BigBelly, but is built on a smaller footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How much sunlight does it need?
The BigBelly System runs on a 12-volt battery, which is kept charged by the solar panel. The battery reserve lasts for a couple of weeks without any sunlight. The units even charge the battery under diffuse light conditions such as cloudy or hazy days. Even in winter with short days and cold temperatures, the units require minimal sunlight.
Do the bags get too heavy?
Customers have not had a problem with bag weight. A compaction dial on the unit allows for a weight adjustment for the compacted trash, typically ranging from 25 - 60 lbs. Because the bag is readily lifted out of the low-height bin, workers have found the BigBelly System simple and ergonomically friendly to use.
Is the machine safe to use?
The BigBelly System is safe and easy for anyone to use. The trash deposit hopper prevents hands from reaching into the compaction area. The unit is locked, and the motor cannot operate with the trash removal door open. The machine runs on a safe, low-voltage system.
Does it create more odor problems than a regular trash can?
The system is enclosed, so odors are contained inside. Customers in Chicago have reported fewer odors from the BigBelly System in summer heat than from the cans they replaced.
Is the unit susceptible to vandalism?
It's made tough; BigBelly's side panels and hopper are made of dent and scratch resistant ABS plastic. The front door and rear panel are constructed of heavy-gauge galvanized steel. The solar panel has a polycarbonate shield to protect it from impact, scratches, and graffiti. To date, vandalism and graffiti have not been a major customer issue.
Is it resistant to sand and saltwater?
The exterior has passed 10-year accelerated life-cycle corrosion testing. Customers with machines at beaches have had no problems with sand. The weather-resistant powder-coat finish over galvanized steel is designed for long life in icy and marine environments.
How hard is it to maintain?
The BigBelly is very low maintenance. We recommend routine lubrication of the chains at least once a year, and estimate that the battery will need to be replaced and recycled after 4 years. To maintain the neat and clean appearance of the units, we recommend powerwashing of units, including the hopper and internal chamber when necessary.
What colors are available?
Currently, there are 2 color designs available: black with charcoal gray accents or green with charcoal gray accents.

The LED indicators on the units provide timely indication of when units need to be emptied, often long after you would typically empty standard trash containers. The enclosed design keeps debris and odors trapped inside, while keeping undesirable pests out such as bees, yellow jackets, and rodents. The solar-powered operation shows others that you care about the environment, while the side panel space lends itself to advertising by vendors and/or sponsors of your event.
